Steel Buildings - Responsibility

Steel Building Foundation Design

For a steel building project, the supplier is not responsible for the design, materials, or workmanship of the foundation. The anchor bolt plans that are prepared by the supplier are for the purpose of showing the location, diameter, and projection of anchor bolts required to attach the steel building system to the foundation.

The supplier is responsible for providing to the dealer loads that are imposed by the steel building system on the foundation. It is the responsibility of the end customer to ensure that proper provisions are made for specifying bolt embedment, bearing angles, tie rods, and any other associated items embedded in the concrete foundation. It is also the responsibility of the end customer to ensure that the foundation design is adequate for the design loads imposed by the steel building system, other imposed loads, and the bearing capacity of the soil and other conditions of the building site.

Framed Openings

The design of framed openings that meet the design loads specified by the order documents is the responsibility of the steel building supplier. The design of the materials that are supplied by others to be installed in these openings is the responsibility of the end customer.

When using components and materials supplied by others, the end user will want to supply the dealer with design loads and other requirements that will have an impact on the design of the steel building system and its compatibility with these other materials. It will be the responsibility of the dealer to specify these requirements within the order documents.

Ventilation and Condensation

It is the responsibility of the end customer to ensure that adequate provisions are made for ventilation, condensation, and other similar requirements.

Existing Buildings

If there are existing buildings or structures on the construction site, it is the responsibility of the end customer to investigate the influence on current structures caused by the steel building system.
