Steel Buildings Fabrication

Steel Building Fabrication Tolerances

The fabrication tolerances used for fabrication vary depending on if the structural members are cold-formed or hot-rolled. Hot-rolled structural members are not as strong as members that have been cold-formed. If the members are hot-rolled, the fabrication tolerances should be in accordance with the "Specifications for Design, Fabrication, and Erection of Structural Steel for Buildings" published by the American Institute of Steel Construction, Inc.

Steel Building Welding Procedures

The welding procedures should meet or exceed requirements of the steel building supplier's design. For welding procedures and pre-qualified welds, refer to "Structural Welding Code" (AWS D1.1) and "Specification for Welding Sheet Steel in Structures" (AWS D1.3) published by the American Welding Society.

Structural Framing Shop Primer

All structural members of the steel building system that are not fabricated of corrosion resistant material or protected by a corrosion resistant coating should be painted with one coat of shop primer. All surfaces to receive shop primer should be cleaned prior to painting.

The coat of shop primer will protect the steel framing for a short period of exposure to usual atmosheric conditions. This coat of shop primer will not provide the durability or corrosion resistance of a field applied finish coat of paint.

Some steel building suppliers use prepainted material. This prepainted material is about equally as corrosion resistant as material that has been coated with shop primer. The manufacturer is not responsible for any deterioration of the primer or corrosion that may occur after the primer has been applied.

Steel that has been shop painted should not be stored in the field for to long before erection unless it has been covered by a protective coating. If the material must be stored in the field, it should be kept off the ground, and positioned to avoid water, mud, and dust exposure. This would be considered to be the responsibility of the end customer.
